Sarah Palin Hosting Series on TLC

Sarah Palin and the Discovery Company are an unlikely pair, but are teaming up to make a documentary about the wildlife and environment in Alaska.

In a move that may defy logic, The Discovery Company hired Sarah Palin to host an eight part series on TLC titled: "Sarah Palin's Alaska."

Discovery Company

The Discovery Company owns educational television channels such as the Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel ("TLC"), Animal Planet and Science Planet. These channels have earned their reputation of airing informative, scientific and educational programs about the Earth, weather patterns, animal habitats and ecological issues, to name a few.

Mark Burnett worked with Discovery from 1996 to 1999 producing "Eco-Challenge," which was the predecessor of his wildly successful "Survivor" series. Burnett is teaming up with Discovery again to produce "Sarah Palin's Alaska."

Sarah Palin on Environmental Issues

Gazelle Emami at The Huffington Post .com refers to Palin as a "notorious anti-environmentalist" in her article dated March 25, 2010 ("Sarah Palin teams Up With Discovery Company") Emami chronicles Palin's most anti-environment policies, including:

  • Palin fought the federal government's decision to include polar bears on the endangered species list.
  • Palin pushed to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to unique and diverse arctic species. The protection and preservation of these areas is vital to the world as we know it.
  • Sarah Palin continues to deny that human activities cause global warming and global climate change. She has gone so far as to write in the Washington Post Op-Ed section, "While we recognize the occurrence of these natural, cyclical environmental trends, we can't say with assurance that man's activities cause weather changes. We can say, however, that any potential benefits of proposed emissions reduction policies are far outweighed by their economic costs."
  • Had Measure 2 in Alaska been passed, it would have banned the practice of gunning down wolves from aircraft. This method of wolf control is considered cruel and is extremely painful for the wolves. Palin spent $400,000 of Alaska's money fighting Measure 2.
  • Palin also came out against Alaska's Measure 4. Measure 4 was a clean water initiative aimed at protecting Bristol Bay, which is one of the world's most productive salmon fisheries.

News Leak

It seems comical that the Discovery Company would hire someone with such an anti-environment track record to host a series about the wildlife and the environment in Alaska. Unfortunately for Discovery, their advertisers may agree that is is comical.

Sarah Palin's pay for the entire series will come to about $2 million. That does not include any of the other astronomical costs for putting on such a documentary. Discovery needs to sell big to advertisers.

A Discovery Company employee leaked to the Huffington Post that after the trailer was shown to a room full of ad buyers, they were laughing. Some were simply rolling their eyes, others were outright laughing.

Perhaps the Discovery Company can be forgiven this one gaff and continue to enjoy its reputation of producing informative pieces about science and the Earth. An environmentalist's Alaska and Sarah Palin's Alaska, however, are two very different things.

I think this is such a biased commentary that I am laughing even harder than the so-called laughing by ad buyers.
How much will you bet personally with me that they will sell all the advertising they need for this? As for "all the costs for this", do you question "all the costs" for Gore's lies in his so-called documentary? or "all the money he has sucked" out of the lies he spread?

Disappointing that they would put Palin on Discovery but not surprising. Hell, I turn on Fox every so often just to see her continue to make a fool of herself. They'll make money off this, and money is needed during these lean times.

People like you make me ashamed to call myself an environmentalist. I can't wait to see Sarah Palin's Alaska. Way to politicize something that was not meant to be political. I will be happy to email advertisers and encourage them to support this show. What you are advocating is total fascist-style censorship from the left and it's not right.

Heh. Even disregarding her track record regarding the environment, Sarah Palin is an uneducated nutjob. Besides, I doubt there's enough space on her hand for an hour-long episode.

Screw Sarah Palin. I hope she gets shot by someone in a helicopter like the poor wolves she's supports the killing of. The world would be better off without people like her.

I agree completely with the author. And so do over 300,000 other people who have signed various petitions on-line to stop this hypocrisy. I find it difficult to understand those that have no respect for our planet and choose to believe the propaganda fed to us by corporate polluters. It's all about profits that they would lose to make the right environmental efforts to clean up their waste.
There is a good chance that there will not be any safe water in less then 50 years. This is not the legacy I want to be responsible for, to pass to our grandchildren.

Hopefully they find lots of alcohol companies to advertise...because Lord knows you'd have to be drunk off your @$$ to watch the show, enjoy it, AND believe that SP is anything close to an "environmentalist".

This is another attempt at Palin to keep her popularity after her fellow Rep. I don't care for Palin, she is a nobody, if Discovery puts her on, I will make my comments about the show and thats that. To me Palin was just a measure to gain votes for the Rep. among women and competition against H.Clinton. What was she thinking, taking that offer, and a pregnant adolescent...are you kidding me?

What a pity that they would choose a person with such a dismal environmental record to host this show. Surely they could find somebody with an actual passion and acumen for true conservation?

Just as with issues its good to hear both sides of an argument before making up one's mind. Palin, with her series, will introduce a lot of Americans to the views of Alaskans on many issues such as ANWR and wolf hunting for which most Americans know nothing of the local view. A majority of Alaskans, including the state fish and game biologists who recommend it, strongly support wolf control and Alaskans definitely support drilling in the 10-02 of ANWR. There are very good reasons for this and none of them have to do with politics or political party. Hopefully the show lets you hear Alaskans view of the world that surrounds them. Being much more in tune with wildlife and nature than most Americans, I think you will be surprised and the common sense, logic, and care Alaskans show toward their environment and yet still strongly support issues which when portrayed in stories like this, seem anti-nature. So check your political egos as the door, forget the hairdo and glasses and rather lets listen to what the people who's home this is have to say about all the wonderful things that surround them. I'm sure a few of us will learn something. Well maybe not the Huffington Post folks, but the rest of us perhaps.

Regardless. she is not a viable spokesperson for anything ecological, environmental, evolutionary or scientific. It's not in her educational background, nor in her personal beliefs.

I think Discovery hoped she might bring to light one of those dinosaurs that coexisted with human beings just about 6000 years back or atleast show some footprints of a man who walked his pet dinosaur around that time.
